18:30 ROSHKO
AUGSBURG
Roshko is a singer-songwriter from Augsburg whose blunt, loving indie pop / folk style comes together with an unmistakable mix of jazz, pop and soul. With a soulful voice and a first-class band, she creates her own musical world live, in which longing, new beginnings and encounters meet groove and lightness – sometimes gentle and thoughtful, sometimes powerful and rousing.
20:00 MERAL POLAT
NETHERLANDS – ANATOLIA
Meral Polat is a Dutch-Kurdish singer, actress and theater maker who combines Anatolian folk music, Kurdish poetry, blues, jazz and improvisational freedom to create her own musical language. Her songs are based on poems by her father, the Kurdish-Alevi poet Ali İhsan Polat, as well as stories of origin, memory, loss and resistant hope. With her quartet, she expands this sound world with additional colors, dynamics and rhythmic depth. Modal melodies, earthy grooves, poetic lyrics and an intense stage presence meet an interplay that mediates between tradition and contemporary energy. In the context of “Waterways”, their songs open up a resonating space between Anatolia, Kurdistan and the European diaspora. The history of a region that has been a transit area, border region and playing field for imperial powers for centuries and in which questions of migration, belonging and awakening continue to have an effect to this day also resonates.
21:30 MARI FROES
BRAZIL
The 22-year-old Brazilian singer and songwriter Mari Froes is a figure of identification for Gen Z and one of the most exciting young voices of the new Música Popular Brasileira. Her intimate, modern blend of MPB, samba and bossa nova reaches a large, mainly young audience worldwide via streaming platforms and social media. She was born in the Brazilian state of Goiás in 2003 and began her musical career by publishing her own versions of her favorite songs on YouTube, which have since been clicked hundreds of millions of times. Today, her songs count millions of monthly listeners on Spotify, viral clips on TikTok and a COLORS performance of “Gabriela” as reference points for a young, globally networked fan community. Live, Mari Froes combines the lightness of Brazilian song traditions with a reduced, immediate presence, in which closeness, melancholy and youthful self-assertion come together.
