BCUC

SOUTH AFRICA

BCUC, short for Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness, is a seven-piece band from Soweto and one of South Africa’s most impressive live formations. Their sound combines indigenous funk, hip-hop, punk energy, spiritual chants, bass and driving percussion to create music that is at once physical, political and ecstatic. Since their beginnings in a converted shipping container near the place where Desmond Tutu was active during the anti-apartheid era, BCUC have developed into an internationally acclaimed band. Their concerts are less classical performances than collective rituals: long, hypnotic pieces, polyphonic singing, call-and-response, intense grooves and an immediate connection with the audience. BCUC understand music as “for the people, by the people, with the people” and bring together local stories from Soweto with global club and festival energy. After their acclaimed performance in 2019, they are now returning to Augsburg for Water & Sound.
