MELINA

GREECE – FRANCE

Melina Vlachos is a French-Greek singer, oud player and songwriter who describes her style as “neo-traditional pop”: a combination of Greek modal music, oriental timbres, Balkan influences and contemporary pop sensibility. Growing up in a family of musicians between France and Greece, she started out playing the violin before the oud became her central instrument. In her songs, MELINA combines personal lyrics with traces of rebetiko, maqam-like melodies, electronic textures and a stage presence that is both intimate and powerful. Her music moves between tradition and the present, between the Mediterranean, Eastern sound traditions and European pop, without merely quoting these influences. Her songs open up a space of voice, oud, rhythm and memory, in which islands, coasts, languages and personal stories are set in motion.
