MOKOOMBA
MOKOOMBA
Zimbabwe
Mokoomba, one of the world’s leading contemporary Afro bands, brings the soul of Zimbabwe to the stage with their explosive stage presence and unique blend of Afro-fusion and traditional Tonga rhythms. The six-piece group hails from the town of Victoria Falls and their music is deeply rooted in the traditions of Tonga culture, which is closely linked to the Zambezi River. In their songs, they often sing about the mighty Zambezi, which is not only an important lifeline for the region, but also has spiritual significance for the local population. The thundering Victoria Falls, called “Mosi-oa-Tunya” (the smoke that thunders) in the Tonga language, inspire the powerful rhythms and infectious energy of Mokoomba’s music. Through their unique blend of traditional African sounds and modern elements, the band succeeds in bringing the vibrancy and cultural diversity of the Zambezi Valley to the stage and bringing the close connection between music, culture and the rivers of Africa closer.
