MONSIEUR DOUMANI (Cyprus)
MONSIEUR DOUMANI
From Cyprus
In Monsieur Doumani’s music, rich in textures, one hears not only the rebellious spirit of rembetiko, but also the most important instrument of this genre, the tsouras. The multi-award winning group Monsieur Doumani was founded in 2011 in the Cypriot capital Nicosia.
The main source of inspiration for the music of Antonis Antoniou (tsouras, vocals), Demetris Yiasemides (trombone, flute, vocals) and Andys Skordis (guitar, vocals) is the Cypriot tradition. Monsieur Doumani, with her distinctive style, creates Cypriot songs that reflect today’s Cypriot society as well as the uncertain circumstances of our time. Monsieur Doumani’s third studio album “Angathin” received the prestigious German Record Critics Award in the category “World Music” in 2018 and reached the top of the World Music Charts Europe. Other honors included the “Critics Award” at the 2018 Andrea Parodi World Music Awards and nominations in the “Best Group” category at the 2016 and 2019 Songlines Music Awards.
