PARADE OF THE WATERFOWL

Interactive parade and art performance

The parade of the water bird moves from Siebentischpark through Augsburg’s canals, parks and old town streets to the city center. The figure of the water bird is inspired by the ancient Egyptian Bennu, a mythical bird associated with water, creation, renewal and cyclical return. With artistic objects, music, dance and playful activities, the parade invites families, children, young people and all interested parties to walk along and join in. The city’s waterways become visible as lifelines: as connections between the city forest, historic canals, World Heritage sites and everyday urban life.

The many different streams and canals in the city forest brought drinking and process water to the city. While the drinking water came from spring streams, the service water was diverted from the Lech in canals. The ramparts at the Red Gate are bordered by an aqueduct towards the open-air stage. This bridge supplied the waterworks at the Red Gate with water from the city forest in the south. The canals in the Lechviertel have been supplying water power for over 1000 years. The Lech canals were indispensable for the many handicraft businesses, which used water wheels to drive their machines.

In 2026, the parade will be extended to include the floating Wardian Case sculpture and the “Tea Chariot”. The tea plant from the installation in the Dominican Church will leave the exhibition space and become part of a moving procession through the city. Accompanied by musicians (“The Waterbirds”) and dancers, the poetic imagery of the waterbird and the historical lines of the waterways come together.
