Poetry & conversation – Respect! “Water, Womanhood, Diaspora”

Rupinder Kaur Waraich is a Birmingham-born Panjabi poet and multidisciplinary artist whose work spans poetry, performance, theater and film. Her debut collection Rooh mixes Panjabi, Hindi, Urdu and English in poems about love, religion, politics, history and gender, challenging orthodox social and religious norms. In her new volume Tigress With Wings, a “sensual, jasmine-infused” ode to (brown girl) girlhood and coming of age, she unfolds a poetic story of transformation from Panjab to Birmingham, where legendary love figures, Partition heritage and the creativity of growing up collide.

From the rivers of Panjab to the canal networks of the English Midlands, waterways become symbols of connection and separation, of work and survival. They carry stories of migration, colonial entanglements and cultural exchange. In Rupinder Kaur Waraich’s poetry, Panjabi heritage, coming-of-age experiences of young women and diasporic memories intertwine to create powerful reflections on identity, place and belonging. Rupinder Kaur Waraich reads poems and an essay and then talks in an open discussion about memory, migration and post-colonial experiences that still shape cultural identity today.

An event of the Water & Sound Festival as part of the series “Respekt! Augsburg lives diversity” by the Office for Social Integration and the Augsburg City Library. No registration required.
